Macbeth Tragic Hero Or A Dead Butcher English Literature Essay
When ha captain speaks of Macbeth he makes violent references, and reefers to Christ's place of death "Except they meant to bathe in reeking wounds, Or memorize another Golgotha," It is undeniably so that Macbeth is a butcher, as a butcher is a bloody or cruel murderer. I believe that the quotation " This dead butcher and his fiend-like queen" is a true assessment of Macbeth but not of Lady Macbeth. Macbeth is a dead butcher, he shows this from his violent na This proves that he was not just a butcher'.
Lady Macbeth proves to be more than just Macbeth's fiend-like queen. From the other characters point of view, Macbeth and Lady Macbeth are truly just a butcher and his fiend-like queen'. It is a form of dramatic irony - the audience knows that Macbeth and Lady Macbeth were not just butchers'. No Fear Shakespeare: Macbeth: Act 5 Scene 8 Page 4
I partially agree with the claim hat Macbeth is a butcher but I believe that it is an injustice to describe him only as a butcher because he does have a conscience. Lady Macbeth is clearly the villain described as the "fiend like queen". This clearly shows that lady Macbeth is a "fiend like queen" indeed. We cannot therefore say that Macbeth is more than a butcher who murders in cold-blood.
Does Macbeth deserve his fate? However by the end of the play he is seen as a "dead butcher- and a "tyrant- Macbeth had murdered his way through eight victims, the traitor Macdonald, king Duncan and his two grooms, Banquo and Macduff's wife and son and also young Siward. Macbeth's personality at the beginning of the play was described by his wife as being "too full of the milk of human kindness- This suggests that he is too kind to do anything too malicious, especially towards his own king.
Personally I believe they can't, but this does not make them necessarily totally evil. Characters in the text, namely the doctor in act five scene one and Malcolm, act five scene nine, voice both aspects of this argument. The doctor seems to forgive her actions, Malcolm's description is justified only to an extent because Macbeth and Lady Macbeth followed the path the witches engineered for them to follow, and the witches ensured that the seeds of evil within them grew.
However, it was Lady Macbeth's insistence on Duncan's death that started Macbeth's corruption and led to him being a tyrant because alone Macbeth would not have acted as he harboured too many doubts. The influence of the witches is shown right at the beginning of the play, where the witches immediately plant the influence of evil and supernatural into the play. To meet with Macbeth' Lady Macbeth was angry with Duncan, and was in the process of plotting to kill him. She kept telling Macbeth that they were not going to fail.
Lady Macbeth plans to kill Duncan and then place the blame on two chamberlains.

Shakespeare uses a family scene of a mother and son, before the murder, to provoke great empathy for them when they are killed. This murder is done in cold blood and shows that at this point Macbeth is a homicidal tyrant. His moral degradation is so low that even his enemies take pity on him.
I believe that Macbeth was not innocent, he performed brutal butchery at times but he shows some repentance as he nobly fights Macduff knowing he will be killed.
